Electrical Surveys

The use of thermography in the electrical field has always been directed at the electrical boards, connections and wirings to look for “hotspots”.
This doesn’t always ensure that these are operating at optional efficiency.

Graeme Stewart, the Technical Director of MBG Thermographic Surveys (Pty) Ltd, says that this is the most common use of thermography in the world. He goes on to say that it is used in most industries including manufacturing and mining but also in the building and healthcare industries. Although this does help companies to reduce the cost of electricity and helps prevent loss due to internal power failures, it is only one aspect where Thermography can help in reducing the overall energy and risk management costs for the client, he says.

Within the field of electrical thermographic surveys, Graeme Stewart the Technical Director of MBG Thermographic Surveys (Pty) Ltd says that to ensure that the electrical system is operating efficiently and effectively it is important that all aspects of the electrical system are surveyed on a continuous basis. The very least it should be covered once a year, but ideally this should be done once in the summer months and once in the winter months. He goes on to say that an inexpensive survey and the prompt repairing of the items identified by the thermographer will prevent breakdowns, injuries and in some cases the death of employees.

As the Technical Director, and a internationally qualified & certified thermographer, he warns companies that a thermographer is a specialist in analysing the images produced by the thermographer whilst on site. A person without the specialised training cannot accurately inform the client of the danger of the faults detected, he says.
